Tighten Up That Skin!

By: Andrea

I receive several questions from folks on what are the best workout routines to tone up (ugh, no such thing!).  I first inform them there is no such thing as toning (I wrote a blog about, check it out Toning…Is It A Thing?).  Then I ask, “do you want to tighten your skin?”  In order to do that, you must change any and all bad eating habits you may have and start with a clean eating diet.  This means, replacing all bad carbs with good carbs.  Of course, the question inevitably comes back, what are considered good carbs and bad carbs?  Here is a list:

Good Carbs

  • Fresh fruit (berries, bananas, apples, pineapples)
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Baked Potatoes
  • Oatmeal
  • Brown Rice
  • Whole Wheat Pasta
  • Leafy Greens (spinach, kale)
  • Whole Grain Bread

Bad Carbs

  • Artificial fruit juice
  • Processed foods
  • Cookies
  • Chips
  • Soda
  • Cereal

I like to say, if it looks and sounds like it would be bad for you, 9 times out 10 it is, stay away from it!  Once your nutrition is in order, the workouts become better because your body is breaking down fat deposits and burning fat.  You want to be careful, however, because some fats are essential to your body in protecting organs.  I am a firm believer in consulting with a Physician before taking on a rigorous, consistent workout routine.  You want to make sure your body is physically capable of handling certain workouts.  However, that does not mean you shouldn’t start somewhere.  Basic skin tightening workouts include:

  • Squats – glutes
  • Lunges – glutes
  • Planks – abs/core strengthening
  • Crunches – abs
  • Bicep curls – biceps
  • Bicycles – abs
  • Leg Raises – abs

These are just a few and to get the ball rolling with light workouts in addition to a well-balanced diet.  The combination of fitness with nutrition, especially with regarding to tightening the skin, allows you to increase your performance and maximize your strength.  It’s really up to you on how far you want to go.  I’m a firm believer in you cannot do one without doing the other, meaning if you are going to tighten up your skin, you need nutrition and you need the workouts to package the product.  How far do you want to go, and is it worth it?
