The Fitness Mantra: Nutrition, Nutrition, Nutrition

Location, location, location.  This mantra is chanted and drilled into every Real Estate Agent’s brain as the number one rule of real estate.  The sale of the house, the value of the property, all depends on the location of the property.  Let’s put it into a fitness perspective.  Trainers and Nutritionist are taught that body development, health and energy all depend on nutrition.  Taking into account what you put into your body and the results you see all focus on your nutrition, what you eat.

I am a firm believer in “you are what you eat”. I ate massive amounts of carbs (pasta, bread, pasta, bread, you get the idea) to the point where my stomach looked like that of a Hawaiian Sweet Roll.  Some may disagree and say that because of my natural small size that that is farfetched.  However, I am here to say that my biscuit belly theory is indeed fact!  Now that I’m in my 30s and “life” seems to get in the way a lot the rolls and the weight gain are extreme and excessive.  When I was competing in fitness competitions I took eating more seriously, watching my carb intake, cutting out sugar, low sodium, more leafy green veggies—my stomach began to go down.  I no longer saw what looked to be another life form in my midsection, but I saw a flat stomach, and, dare I say, abs!

The more I saw this the more I wanted to continue on this healthy eating journey.  I became open to new healthy foods (kale, hummus, almond butter, veggie burgers, rye bread, etc.) that I wouldn’t have tried otherwise unless someone offered it to me.  But I find myself in the grocery store seeking these items over my usual food items of sweet rolls (any), beef sausage, pizza, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream, the list goes on.  When I started seeing the results is when I started looking more into nutrition, trying to not only understanding it and how I could apply it to my workout regime but how I would continue with it to get the results I was seeking.  I had to learn what to eat and what not to eat; how to prepare it and the most effective way it would benefit me.  I had to also learn it wasn’t just the workouts that would get me the results I wanted.  The workouts came with the nutrition as the core.

Now, remember when I said earlier that “life” can get in the way and turning 30 and all that?  So that’s what ended up happening.  I stopped competing, focused on other parts of my life I semi neglected and went balls to the wall with eating junk again.  Yep, completely fell all the way off the wagon.  I gained roughly 30 pounds and my muscles were slowly disappearing.  There were a number of factors that contributed to my rapid decline and “I don’t care how my body looks” attitude.  Stress, depression, wanting to taste food again regardless of its nutritional value.  I just wanted to eat and live.  Then it hit me.  I couldn’t do that anymore.  My dad always told me, “eat what you can now because when you turn 30 it’s downhill from there.”  He couldn’t be more right.  My body is changing and nutrition has become the furthest thing from my mind.  But it happens.  You’re not a bad person for falling off you just have to know how to get back on the motivation train and work it out.  Because I know how it looks to have abs and defined muscles, what to eat and not to eat, I can get back to where I was.  Don’t get me wrong, I do like that my biscuit booty has grown and that I’m not the “skinny” chick as I was before.  Size does look good on me.  But it’s the kind of size that matters.  I’m not happy with my stomach nor the fact that my muscles have depleted.  But I know I have what it takes to get back in shape and make my body work with me if I stick to my nutritional game plan.

Here are a few foods on the clean eating grocery list that I like to incorporate in my diet:

  • Oats
  • Brown Rice
  • Quinoa
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Lean Ground Beef
  • Lean Turkey
  • Coconut Oil
  • Eggs
  • Chicken Breast
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Kale
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Beans (kidney beans, red beans, black beans, white beans, lima beans)
  • Spinach
  • Almonds
  • Carrots
  • Almond Butter

Foods and nutrients that are deemed “bad” or unhealthy are sugar, salt, processed foods, artificial flavoring, saturated fats, and preservatives, just to name a few.  When copious amounts of these are ingested our blood sugar levels begin to fluctuate, making our bodies susceptible to health complications.  If our meals consists of unbalanced and unhealthy portions of simple sugars and refined carbohydrates (white bread and pasta, all-purpose flour, sugary drinks) our blood glucose levels rise and thus rises our energy levels.  This doesn’t last very long.  Our bodies begin to shut down or crash.  While some of the glucose is stored as glycogen, the rest is stored as fat.  I know I just gave a highly detailed explanation but this was all a part of my research and understanding how our bodies break down certain foods and nutrients, where does it go and how does it make the case that we are what we eat.

Nutrition is simple but sometimes needs drilling into our head, almost chanted, for us to understand its importance.  Just like that of the Real Estate Agent’s mantra location, location, location, your body and overall health depends on your nutrition.  You can work out 6 days a week for 2 hours.  You will see your body change slightly, however, it’s nothing compared to when nutrition is firmly at the center and becomes the factor of restructuring your body.  When it comes to fitness and you are seeking results, just think nutrition, nutrition, nutrition.

  1. Thanks! This was helpful information. I recently lost 26lbs and I’ve been trying to get ideas about easy things to make that are nutritious. I didn’t change much of what I ate, but more so took my time eating and incorporated exercise into my routine. I do want to get better at what I put in my body, but I’m not a fan of cooking, so if you know of any easy dishes, that would be much appreciated. I’m not a fan of tomato or avocado (unless it’s in sushi) and I seem to find only recipes that have those ingredients. I’m enjoying what I’ve read so far and I look forward to going back to the archives to read more. Great job ladies!

The fitness goals and milestones that we are able to set for ourselves and ultimately achieve is definitely one that deserves praise, so way to go!
